Maui Resorts Named after a legendary demigod said to have pulled the Hawaiian Islands out of the sea, Maui is rich in history and culture. The island was united as a kingdom in the early 15th century and later joined the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1800s. Lahaina, on Maui's northern coast, became the capital and served as Hawaii's center of government for five decades.

Whaling and sugar industries flourished in Maui during this time, bringing an influx of plantation workers from China, Japan, Puerto Rico, Korea, the Philippines, Portugal and Europe. The influences of these immigrants melded with Hawaiian traditions to create a unique culture that can be seen today in everything from Maui's gastronomy to its art.

Maui Vacations Whether you seek adventure, romance or relaxation, Maui has it all. Watch the sun rise from 10,000 feet above sea level atop Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano. Drive through thriving rainforests, shimmering waterfalls and stunning seascapes on the scenic Hana Highway route. Hike through Iao Valley State Park to the 1,200-foot Iao Needle overlooking splashing streams and lush valleys. Take to the waves of Kaanapali Beach and see the daily cliff diving ceremony off Black Rock. Swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking and parasailing are just some of the popular water sports here. And if you visit Maui during the winter, keep an eye out for approximately 3,000 humpback whales frolicking off the coast.

Head to the whaling village of Lahaina for museums and art galleries, indulge in a shopping spree at Wailea's upscale shopping centers, or sample award-winning restaurants set among the Cook Pines of Kapalua. Other options include exploring ancient temples, teeing off at championship golf courses sprinkled throughout the island, or studying Hawaii's biodiversity at the Maui Ocean Center.
